Values Level Thinking the Key to Personal Development and Achievement

Values determine how we spend our time, they shape our priorities and essentially give us the motivation to do the things that we do, they also give us the measure, the bench mark if you like as to what is good and what is bad.

Here’s what people don’t tell you and what you really do need to know! To understand why your life is as it is, what is working for you and what is not working for you. We need to look at your Values Level Thinking. We can’t help but have society, our own personal experience based constraints and rules that may end up in conflict with our core wants, needs and desires. This is important information that you need to be able to grow as an individual and for you to be able to achieve results!

An example that we come across all too often is a passionate budding entrepreneur with fantastic ideas, dreams and aspirations of starting their own business, of being their own boss the master of their own destiny (essentially what we would describe as Values Level 5 thinking) BUT they feel stuck in their existing job. Why? Because I’ve got a degree in this stuff, I’ve studied for years to get this job. The money is good, they have a mortgage and a family to support and a nagging thought going round and round in their head that people like me don’t leave a secure well paid job, nobody in my family has ever worked for themselves, what would people think, what if it doesn’t work, what if I fail? (This is Values Level 4 thinking)

Now this creates an uncomfortable conflict for that person.

And conflicts like this can be unpleasant for a short time until the need gets so great that the transition to the next values level happens naturally. They can however last for a long time with the familiarity of what you know no matter how frustrating and unfulfilling it is can keep you stuck, restricting you personal growth and development. People can even stay stuck for a life time regretting all of the “I should have”, “I could have”, “I would have”...”but I didn’t”!!

Regardless of what Values Level system is predominant for a person, it’s important to remember that the system has little influence on intelligence or temperament as no Values Level is more or less intelligent than another. Values Levels have to do with the ability of an individual to adapt to the ever changing environmental conditions. A person’s capacity to adapt to new environmental conditions allows them to grow and develop new and more complex ways of thinking giving them the fundamental flexibility that will create the results that they want. Ie to make the successful transition from being an employee to being a business owner/entrepreneur
